Welcome to "The Retreat @ Koduko Sanctuary", a serene haven nestled within the vibrant Koduko Sanctuary.
Koduko Sanctuary is a private estate featuring two charming country houses, “The Retreat” and “Rimba”, each owned independently and dedicated to hosting small groups seeking a memorable getaway.
The goal of both owners was to build sustainable homes in a remote area that allows peace and tranquility in a stunning environment. We have built our houses in a sustainable way and the house is 100% off grid: a hybrid solar system to generate our electricity and all of our water is collected by rainwater. Coping with the challenges of the offroad access and COVID restrictions, we have spent 5 years to building this place and are in love with how both our houses have finally developed, each with our personal touch.
At "The Retreat @ Koduko Sanctuary", you’ll enjoy the independence and comfort of a
self-catering guest house. Feel free to plan your days as you wish, from cooking your
favorite meals in our fully equipped kitchen to exploring the stunning natural surroundings at your own pace. Our focus is on providing a serene retreat rather than scheduled entertainment.
The Retreat and its amenities are designed for you to unwind and enjoy
nature at its best. Both houses are exclusive to registered guests to ensure privacy and a
tranquil environment. We are here to assist you in making the most of this secluded experience and can help plan for your basic necessities.
At Koduko Sanctuary, tranquility reigns supreme.
You can expect breathtaking views, peaceful forest walks, spectacular sunsets, and
exclusive access to our secluded beach. Our nearest neighbors are a friendly local
community, a brief five-minute drive away. While they are welcoming, please note that
communication may be limited for those not fluent in Bahasa Melayu.
You’ll not be left alone; our Caretakers will be here for you:
Aunty Bila and Uncle Elias look after the land and the houses. They will be around during your stay and you can always ask them for assistance if anything happens. English is limited, but Aunty Bila can communicate with you. They will be around the property doing maintenance and general cleaning. If you are staying for a longer period of time, they will change the bed sheets, towels, etc every 4th day.
Aunty Bila can be contacted at +60 12 802 0742 you will find them at the caretaker’s house at the bottom of the property if you need to.

Location
Getting to/from Koduko Sanctuary:
Located just a two-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu International Airport and 45 minutes from the nearest town, Kota Belud, our estate offers a break from the urban hustle.
The journey includes a scenic drive through national and district roads followed by a thrilling 20-minute off-road adventure, adding an element of excitement to your arrival.
Because the last off-road stretch is not practical for non 4x4 vehicle, it is mandatory to use our 4x4 transport to arrive at the house.
We can accommodate your transfer from Kota Kinabalu Airport if necessary, or other pick up, please tell us your travel plans ahead (3 days before arrival)
Home truths
There is no air conditioning in the house as this would exceed the capacity of the solar
system.
The architecture helps retain a cooling effect in the rooms. Each room has a ceiling fan you comfortable while you sleep. Even with no air conditioning, the rooms are pleasant and comfortable to sleep at night.
We ask that you be conscious of water and electricity as these are both precious resources in a remote off-grid property.
Please don’t waste water as every drop counts, and turn off lights when rooms are not in use.
If the solar system drains, then a generator will start up to charge the batteries and then shut off. We try to minimize generator use and maximize our solar-generated electricity.

Preparing for Your Journey
-The villa is a remote, self-catering escape — stock up on groceries in Kota Kinabalu before arrival.
-No Grab Food / Uber Eats delivery is available.
-Nearest shop/market: 45-minute drive to Kota Belud (alcohol is unavailable locally).
-The last 6 km of your journey is off-road; our 4x4 transport ensures a smooth, safe arrival.
-Airport transfers or pick-ups can be arranged with at least 3 days’ notice.

Security depositA MYR 200 hold on a credit or debit card is required before your arrival. The funds will be released once we confirm no damage was caused during your stay.

Thank you for not smokingThis is a smoke-free home. Violation of the no-smoking policy will result in forfeiture of the full security deposit and my be subject to a fine.

HOUSE RULES:
Do not take any art, kitchen utensils, or anything else from the house. These have been curated with passion by us and are all here for our kids and guests to enjoy.
Please treat the house as if it was yours. We have put a lot of time and energy and want the house to last for years to enjoy.
There is no smoking allowed in the house. Please smoke outside and please do not litter cigarette butts on the property.
Trash and recycling: We have labeled bins in the kitchen for general waste and recycling. Please do your part to separate rubbish into the correct bins so we can effectively recycle what we can.
As there are 2 houses on our property, if there are other people staying in the 2nd house, please do not make loud noises after 9PM.
Do not plug any high-capacity electronic devices in that will drain the solar storage. Every Kw of electricity is precious!
Pets: We allow you to bring your animal as long as it is potty trained. Please message us about this if you are wanting to bring your dog or cat. There are a few dogs that sometimes come to the property from the small village down the hill..
